Managing sustainable business

Updated: Aug 22, 2021

Sustainability is a term that we often hear in media and it can be defined as a process or entity, which is able of being continued indefinitely into the future, avoids depletion of natural resources or long term effect on the environment.

In simpler words, if we are concerned with a long term viability of human societies than we have to ensure that the society continues indefinitely into the future.

In order to do se we need to:

* understand the impact of human activity on the environment and to manage it on the way so the resources are not depleting

* devise economic systems that support the society and provide the life we enjoy

* devise social systems that are harmonious and fair and our activities must not compromise the social environment.

Saying that, there will be number of aspects related to sustainability: Environmental, Social and Economic. These are involving the management of resources, economic growth, research and development, standards of living, education and equal opportunities to name the few.

The concept of sustainability is exciting but also quite challenging.

We can also look at sustainability by asking ourselves a fundamental question: on what depend our wealth? There is number of dependencies, however the main answer would be that it will depend on the care for environment and human beings.

The latest economic studies suggest, that if the economic sustainability os to be sustained in the future, more attention need to be given to the way resources are consumed. However, this imply limits and the ability of the biosphere to absorb the effects of human activity. It is said that the technology and economic systems can be improved to make a better way to economic growth.

It is also recognised, that we are not near close to the true sustainability and we need to develop in this directions.

The United Nations determined the main goals for achieving it:

No Poverty

Zero hunger

Good health and well-being

Quality education

Gender equality

Clean water and sanitisation

Affordable and clean energy

Decent work and economic growth

Industry, innovation and infrastructure

Reduced inequalities

Sustainable cities and communities

Responsible consumption and production

Climate action

Life below water

Life on land

People, justice and strong institutions

Partnerships for the goals

These goals are very much concerns of a business. Some goals are already related to our organisations. But the truth is that any organisation need to pay closer attention to most of them.

Excellence comes from within the company and continuous outside of it. Within our business, with our suppliers and customers we should be striving to deliver high level of quality, performance and safety.
